In its heyday Instagram made photography a passion for the masses. Taipei has no shortage of spots that went viral around the world. Here are a few of those spots along with some of my personal favorites.
DATONG DISTRICT — The stores here are full of LED lights, Chinese lanterns, and other decorations that make for great backdrops. The photos in this post are all from one store because my photos from the others didn't turn out that well, but trust me when I say you'll have a good time shooting on this street.
📍 Address: No. 91, Chang'an West Road, Datong District Taipei City, 103 (103台北市大同區長安西路91號).
SHILIN DISTRICT — Imagine copy/pasting 1950s South Carolina onto Taiwan... The US provided Taiwan with extensive military assistance during the 1950s and 60s. Housing areas such as this one were developed for officers and advisers working with the ROC military.
📍 Address: No. 4, Guotai Street, Shilin District Taipei City, 111 (111台北市士林區國泰街4號).
WANHUA DISTRICT — Taiwan is proud to be the first Asia country to legalize gay marriage. So this is a great landmark in one of the most popular tourists areas for people to share in that achievement.
📍 Address: Ximen MRT Station Exit 6.
Hotel Papa Whale
WANHUA DISTRICT — Who doesn't want a picture under a huge whale? You'll have to get extra wide and creative if you want to fit the whole thing in frame though cuz the paintng is HUGE!
📍 Address: No. 46號, Kunming Street, Wanhua District, Taipei City, 108
SHILIN DISTRICT — This underpass near Shilin Night Market is a true piece of art. It has been posted all over Instagram a million times by now, but it's still fun to watch people capture it in different ways. This place has endless creative potential.
📍 Address: No. 67, Section 4, Zhongshan North Road, Zhongshan District Taipei City, 10491 (111台北市中山區中山北路四段67號1樓).
Ximen Street Art
WANHUA DISTRICT — The graffiti scene in Taipei here has almost nothing to do with gangs, but everything to do with vibrancy and creativity. Local businesses and even the movie theater hire street artists to color up the area.
📍 Address: No. 19, Kangding Road, Wanhua District Taipei City, 108 (108台北市萬華區康定路19號).
DATONG DISTRICT — This place is insane. Can you believe this happens every day? The best time to come here is before 9:00 a.m. on a weekday if you want to capture scenes like this. Scooter waterfall is a dramatic representation of a real problem in Taipei. This place is choking to death in scooters. Imagine if they all had to drive cars though.
📍 Address: No. 255-6, Section 2, Yanping North Road, Datong District Taipei City, 103 (103台北市大同區延平北路二段255號2樓).
Traditional Theater Center
SHILIN DISTRICT — Within a short walk of Zhi Shan station is this unique building that provides a great backdrop for creative portraiture. I'm not really a portrait guy, hence the lack of portraits here. I've tried to take a few but they just didn't turn out that well. However I've seen a lot of other photographers create awesome ones here. So I'm confident that you can as well!
📍 Address: No. 751, Wenlin Road, Shilin District Taipei City, 111 (11159台北市士林區文林路751號).
Xining Public Housing
WANHUA DISTRICT — This has been a popular Instagram spot for quite some time. However the exact shot often seen on Instagram is most likely faked based on what I saw in person. Either that or the fence near the ledge is new making the desired shot impossible.
📍 Address: No. 4, Xining Rd, Wanhua District, Taipei City, 108
